Kerr puts the "work" into Fundamentals
By Bi Yu

Warriors Steve Kerr Oakland, Calif. 10/6/14 -- With rookie Coach Steve Kerr getting closer to some gametime rehearsals he knows it will take some time and a lot of work to get the Warriors to play to his expectations. Kerr recognizes that he has inherited a playoff contender, so there are some core piece he won't mess with. However to be a championship contender, some tinkering must happen.

"Our style is going to be similiar. We're not going to be changing our pick and roll coverage. We're playing things in a similar fashion to last year," Kerr acknowledged. "This is kind of what I expected. This is a good team. But We've got to get better with the ball. We fling the ball around. That's a problem."

Turnover were a huge problem for the Warriors last year. They were 27th in the league averaging 14.9 apple turnovers a game. Only Denver, Houston and Philadelphia were worse. The Warriors saving grace was they were 9th in turning other their opponent, which kept a slim differential.

"I thought coming into this season that (ball security) is the biggest change we can make as a team," Kerr admits. "Making the easy play. Making the simple play. Taking care of the ball. That will only help our defense. And it should get us better offensively, but it takes a ton of work. We do fundamental stuff, passing drills every single day. And I will say, to this point - very little improvement."

Turnovers are amplified even more in the playoffs. Kerr was brought in specifically to get Golden State further in the playoffs so eventually they can garner some hardware.

"We're just flinging the ball around, turning it over. Our guys are going to have to make the adjust ment, but otherwise we're just going to be doing the same thing. Playing some great games and some poor ones. And not take it to that next step."

To his credit, Kerr has five ringsas a player with two different teams, Chicago Bulls (3) and San Antonio (2). So his pedigree is not in doubt. However this is his first year coaching in the sidelines in any capacity.

The new coach and his players will be testing the waters this week as they start their pre-season games. Golden State goes on the road to play 6 games over the next 13 days. This will give the team and the new coaching staff time to bond and create some chemistry. Kerr understand what it takes to win and the time it takes to play mistake free.

Even thought this is his first year at the helm, he has many successful former coaches to draw from. Kerr is a proven winner over his 15 year illustrious career. He was a member of the 1995-96 Bulls who finished with a record 72 win season.
