Sun Devils deflate Bears with overtime win
By Brenden Anderson

Cal Cobbs layupBerkeley, CA 1/29/14 – The Arizona State Sun Devils (16-5) got their third straight victory, stealing a game in Berkeley 89-78. They sent the California Golden Bears (14-7) on a three game skid since they staring the flat, fresh off loosing on a Los Angeles road trip.  Cal's vallient comeback got dflated after the Sun Devils nailed a three to tie the game at 72 and send it into overtime.

The Bears were playing uphill the entire night after digging themself a hole early by shoot under 35-percent and giving up over 50-percent on the defensive end. Even in the second have they found themselves down as many as 16 points and still clawed their way back.

Senior Justin Cobbs hit two layups in a row with 3:19 left to end a 10-1 run and come within one point which conjured the crowd’s din.  Cobbs kept attacking and gave Cal the lead after scoring on another driving layup with 45 seconds remaining driving layin with 45 seconds remaining gave Cal gave the Bears their first lead since the opening minute. It looked like the Bears were finally glad to be home. The raucous home crowd felt a win was certain after junior center David Kravish knocked down two free throws to take a 72-69 lead with 25-seconds on the clock.  As poorly as Cal played all night a victory was still in reach.

That was until Sun Devil senior swingman Jermaine Marshall put a dagger three into the Bears heart to send the game to overtime.  Cal comeback was quelled as the Arizona State stole the momentum going into the extra period and outscored the Bears 17-6.  Marshall finished with 22 points, including 3-of-5 from the arc.

Arozona State Jahii CarsonWe got complacent.  We let them come back take the lead and control of the game,” Carson stated.  “But my man Jermaine Marshall has huge guts, huge heart.   We ran a play for him. He converted.  Then after that we into a huddle, we new we had the game in the bag because we worked so hard for it.“

It was sophomore sensation Jahii Carson who set Marshall up with the assist and hip screen to give him enough space to send the game to overtime.  5-11 Carson garners a lot of attention as the forth-leading scorer (18.4 ppg.) in the PAC-12.  He had a game-high 7 assists and 29 points on 8-of-17 to lead the Devils.

Cobbs was visibly crushed after the comeback Cal mounted was halted by a three.  Cobbs did everything that he could scoring a team-high 21 and making clutch driving layups down the stretch, yet it wasn’t enough.  Even though it was an uphill battle all night, Cal was in it at the end of regulation.

Penetration by Sophomore Tyrone Wallace (20 points) and a soft touch by Kravish (16 points, 9 rebounds) kept Cal in the game despite their poor first-half shooting and porous defense.  The Sun Devils shot 48.3-percent from the field and 47.4-percent from three (9-of19) for the game.  The Marshall three with 17.7 seconds left popped Cal’s balloon as sent them flailing to a 5-3 Pac-12 record with the nation’s top ranked Arizona headed to Haas next.
