Cal finds firepower from Hobbs to beat Santa Barbara 70-50

12/19/11 Berkeley, Calif. – The Cal Golden Bears (10-2) shoot 55% behind the arc to coast to a 70-50 victory over the Santa Barbara Gouchos (5-4) in the Pete Newell Classic. Sophomore guards Justin Cobb and Allen Crabbe hit a combined 66% of their threes 8-of-12. Cobbs, who took up some of the scoring slack with Jorge Gutierrez out with food poisoning, hit 10-of-12 to finish with a career-high 25 points.

PAC-12 leading scorer (15.8 ppg.), Crabbe, helped the charge tallying 19 points, including 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. The Bears started the game hitting three straight threes. Crabbe put Cal up 12 after connecting on his secon three five-and-a-half minutes into the game. Reserve guard Brandon Smith from De La Salle made the most of his start getting hot out of the box finishing with 8 points and 7 assists.
Cobbs, a 6-2 guard, also did it on the defensive end holding Gouchos All-American candidate 6-5 Orlando Johnson (22 ppg.) to 9 points on 4-of-13 shooting (30%) from the field. The Bears defense was solid acroosthe board. Santa Barbara only landed 15.4% from three and 40.4% from the field for the game.
Forward James Nunley, the Gouchos second leading scorer (17 ppg.), was the only players to score in double figures, as he contributed 10 points on 5-of-12 shooting and missed all 4 of his three point attempts.
